What does a practice look like?
Practice sessions at Northampton Community Rowing for both Juniors and Adults, combine extensive time on the water with targeted land workouts. Rowers engage in various on-water drills that improve technique, stamina, and teamwork. Complementing these water sessions, athletes participate in structured land workouts featuring rowing machines and strength training. This balanced approach enhances overall fitness, builds muscle strength, and prepares members for competitive challenges. With a focus on skill development and physical conditioning, each practice aims to refine performance both on and off the water.

What do I need to bring each day to practice?
As we prepare for practice, it's essential to dress appropriately for the weather. We recommend wearing tight layered clothing to stay comfortable as conditions change. Ensure you have sturdy sneakers to support your movements off the water. Additionally, please bring a water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the session. Preparing with these essentials will help enhance your practice experience.

Do I need to know how to swim?
While it's unlikely that rowers will fall into the water during practice, safety remains a priority. All participants must be able to swim, and swim tests will be conducted prior to rowing sessions to ensure readiness. For those who are not confident swimmers, Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) are available to enhance safety on the water.

I am a parent/caregiver, what can I expect on race day?
Regattas are full-day events, bringing together rowers and their teams for an exciting day of competition. Throughout the day, rowers will spend a significant amount of time at the team trailer, preparing for races and supporting each other. Families are invited to the parent tent located near the race course, where they can provide encouragement and enjoy a selection of food available for both rowers and parents alike. To make the most of the day, participants should wear comfortable clothing featuring the team logo, and bring a camp chair and binoculars for optimal viewing of the races.

What if it is stormy, will I still have practice?
Rowers take great pride in their ability to navigate through a variety of conditions on the water, embracing challenges that many others might shy away from. However, safety remains a top priority at Northampton Community Rowing. On days characterized by high winds or lightning storms, we will refrain from rowing outdoors to ensure the well-being of our athletes. Instead, our commitment to training persists, as we utilize indoor facilities to maintain our skills and teamwork in a safe environment. Adapting to circumstances while prioritizing safety is a cornerstone of our rowing culture.
